ABOUT US
On the 17 June 1981, a General Meeting was held at Kings Meadows High School and the Launceston Light Opera Company was formed.
The first show that the new Society produced was HMS Pinafore (1982) at Broadland House, Launceston and this was followed by The Gypsy Baron (1983), The Mikado (1984), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Trial by Jury (1985), Tarantara! Tarantara! (1986) and Pirates of Penzance (1987).
In 1988, the Society decided to perform Waltzes from Vienna at the Princess Theatre, Launceston and now most of their shows are either performed there or at the Earl Arts Centre.
In 2001, the Society changed its name to the Launceston Musical Society Inc. (LMS) and the first show under the Society's new banner was the very popular The Sound of Music.
The Society also encourages local youth to perform in our shows. The wonderful talent of our young people was highlighted in the shows Guys and Dolls (1998), Entertainment Unlimited (1999) and A Kids Christmas (2003) all of which had a cast under the age of 25 years.
To celebrate the Society's 25th Anniversary (August 2006), a dinner was held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, Launceston for past and present Members and on the following weekend a Gala Concert, A One Night Stand, was performed at the Princess Theatre.
The Society aims to produce at least one major and one minor production every year and in 2007 the Society performed Crazy for You as our major production in August and was part of the community river production, Tamar Tidings in October/November.
In March/April 2008 we presented the highly acclaimed West End musical, Blood Brothers at the Annexe Theatre & joined with the Examiner Newspaper to present the Thank You For The Music Community Variety Concert at the Princess Theatre in October.
